CHAPTER THIRTEEN

CAN you believe someone thought you were having an affair?” Denise tore a breadstick in half. “That is beyond insane.”

Staci swallowed the mouthful of Zuppa Toscana she’d just taken. The soup warmed its way down her throat. “I guess you gotta look at it from their perspective.”

Denise gave her an incredulous look. “Are you defending them?”

Staci shrugged. “Not defending them. Just saying that not realizing I was away and seeing a truck there at night and still there in the morning—well, I’d probably have jumped to the same conclusion.”

“You are way too soft on people.” Denise waggled half a breadstick at her. “But I’m glad you’re that way. It’s a great quality to have in a friend.”

Staci smiled and pushed away her empty soup bowl. She was glad her friend had talked her into doing a late lunch after her time at the spa. It had been exactly what she’d needed after the week she’d had.

“So what’s the latest with Eric?”

“He’s getting along well with Sarah.” Staci hesitated to bring in anything that would dampen the mood, but she had no one else to talk to. “But I think he’s going to be filing for joint custody.”

“Really?” Denise sat back, her brow furrowed. “Just legal or physical, too?”

Staci cocked her head, pondering Denise’s question. “I’m not sure. He just said he wanted joint custody so that he could make decisions if he had to. Or that if anything happened to me, he wouldn’t have to go through the courts to get custody of Sarah.”

“That sounds like legal, not necessarily physical.”

“I never really looked into it, to be honest. I’m not thrilled with the idea of sharing any type of custody of Sarah with anyone. I never thought it would be an issue.”

“One of my employees went through a custody case with her ex and explained it all to me. Eric can’t have joint physical without joint legal, but just because he has joint legal doesn’t automatically mean he has joint physical custody.” Denise tapped the table with her fingers. “You need to ask him what it is.”

“But even if he’s just going for legal now… Well, it just makes it that much easier to go for physical later on, doesn’t it?”

Denise nodded. “Then I guess you need to marry the guy.”

“Very funny.” Staci tried to ignore the hitch in her stomach that Denise’s words caused. For the second time that day, marriage had come up. “That’s not going to happen.”

“Just like you meeting up with him again wasn’t going to happen either, right?”

Staci couldn’t dispute Denise’s logic. The impossible had already happened. But this required hope—and hope with regards to Eric had been something she’d given up on a long time ago. “Why don’t we try discussing another topic? Like has Philip proposed to you yet?”

Denise rolled her eyes and motioned for the waitress. “Can you bring me the dessert menu please?” The waitress pointed to the plastic stand on the edge of the table. “Thanks.”

“Is this a mega-chocolate discussion?”

“You betcha,” Denise said and ordered the biggest chocolate dessert they had.
